Weightless is the presentation to reach for when everything else looks too eager. No lead, no jighead, nothing pulling the bait through the water faster than it wants to go.
Why it works
A soft plastic with nothing but a hook in it falls slowly and erratically, and it glides rather than drops. That fall looks like something that has been injured but has not given up, which is exactly the thing fish are built to notice.
It also means the bait stays in the strike zone far longer than a weighted rig. In clear water especially, that extra time in front of a fish is what turns a look into a bite.
The hard part
Doing less. The natural instinct is to keep the rod moving, and a weightless fluke asks you to stop and wait through a fall that feels far too long. Count it out if you have to.
If you think you are fishing it too slowly, you are probably fishing it about right.
Watch your line
You will rarely feel a bite on the fall. You will see it. Keep your eye on the point where the line enters the water and stay suspicious of anything that looks different from the last cast: a twitch, a sideways move, slack arriving sooner than it should.
