In clear water you are being watched long before you get a bite.
Clear water is the condition that punishes everything you are doing wrong. Heavy line, short casts, a shadow across the water — none of it matters much when visibility is a foot, and all of it matters when it is fifteen.
The single biggest improvement in clear water is casting further and standing further back. If you can see the fish, the fish saw you first. Longer casts, a lower profile on the bank, and keeping your shadow off the water will do more than any change of bait.
This is where colour genuinely matters, and it matters in the opposite direction to stained water. You want something that looks like food rather than something that announces itself. Green Pumpkin is the default for a reason — it reads as almost anything in clear water. Water Yer Melon works the same way with a bit more life in the light.
Fluorocarbon disappears better than mono and far better than braid, and dropping from fifteen pound to ten will get you bites in clear water. That is a real trade — you will lose a fish in cover eventually. In clear open water it is worth it.
Clear water fishes best when the light is not overhead. Early, late, or under cloud, fish move out of cover and up in the water column. In flat midday sun they pull tight to shade and get much harder to tempt. Fish the edges of the day and the middle of it becomes a bonus rather than a frustration.
