The fall transition on Pacific Northwest lakes

As the water cools, fish move and their food moves with them. Covering water is how you find where they went.

Autumn is the season that rewards moving and punishes patience, which is the reverse of most of the advice on this site. Water temperature drops, bait leaves the main lake, and the fish that were reliably on a spot all summer are simply gone.

What is actually changing

Cooling surface water breaks up the layering that held through summer, and the whole water column becomes liveable. At the same time the year’s baitfish move toward the backs of creeks and coves. Fish follow food. That is the entire mechanism.

Fish the back, not the point

The summer pattern of working main-lake structure stops producing. Start at the backs of creek arms and work out, rather than the other way round. If the bait is there, the fish are close. If the back of the creek is empty, leave and try another one — do not grind it out.

Cover water fast

This is the season for a swimbait, because the problem to solve is a search problem. You are not trying to tempt a fish you know about; you are trying to find the group. Long casts, steady retrieve, and keep moving until something eats.

Once you get a bite, slow down and work that area properly. Autumn fish group up, so one fish usually means more within a short distance.

The Pacific Northwest wrinkle

Our autumn arrives with rain, and rain means colour in the water and rising creek inflows. That is not a problem, it is a signal — inflow brings food and oxygen, and the first stained water pushing into a clear lake is worth finding. Fish the seam where the two meet.
